Firefox shortcut combination no longer working

Featured Replies

I use CTRL+SHIFT+Q as my shortcut to activate the browser extension on all the browsers I've used Enpass on.

Setting this up in Firefox took a bit of work, because by default Firefox uses this keyboard shortcut to exit / close the browser window. Fortunately, there is an off switch for that shortcut in Firefox.

I've been using Enpass and Firefox for months without issue. But recently, I've noticed that the Enpass extension for Firefox on my home PC no longer opens via the keyboard shortcut. It still works fine on my work laptop, though (same version of Firefox: 138.0.1, but it also didn't work at home in the previous version, and my work laptop was fine in the previous version).

I have also noticed that if I try to reset the keyboard shortcut at home to CTRL+SHIFT+Q, I see an "Invalid combination" message, which I don't remember seeing before. I'm not sure if this is due to an update to Enpass, or an update to Firefox. I suspect the former.

I am going to try and uninstall and reinstall both Firefox and Enpass to resolve this issue, but I thought I would also post here to see if anyone else is having this trouble or if this is a deliberate change. If it's a deliberate change, that will be annoying as I've used this combination for ages now and there are few options remaining for a one-handed combination (many of the combinations in this area of the keyboard are used for other purposes). For additional context, I use CTRL+ALT+Q to open the main Enpass app, and CTRL+SHIFT+Q to activate the browser extension, so I really just switch between SHIFT and ALT. I would rather not have to go looking for a paired combination.

Any help, advice or support would be appreciated.

I’ve forwarded your request and the specifics of the issue to our Enpass Product Team for further investigation. They will look into the behavior you're experiencing with the CTRL+SHIFT+Q shortcut not functioning in Firefox and showing as an "Invalid combination."

I’ll keep you updated on any developments. If we need more information from your side, we’ll reach out via this thread.

I wanted to inform you about a recent change in Firefox that may impact the way keyboard shortcuts for extensions are handled. Firefox has introduced stricter restrictions on the use of reserved or system-level shortcuts, which may result in an “Invalid combination” error when attempting to assign certain key combinations.

Specifically, the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Q may now be permanently restricted and unavailable for reassignment.

As a workaround, we recommend using an alternative shortcut such as Ctrl+Shift+Y to continue using the extension without interruption.

Thank you, that is good to know.

It is frustrating, but I have remapped my keyboard shortcuts to be:

  • CTRL+SHIFT+1 for "in-browser" usage (to activate the extension), and...
  • CTRL+ALT+1 for "out of browser" usage (to activate the Windows app).

I wanted to use shortcuts that could be easily reached with one hand, and worked across all the browsers I use.

It looks like these combinations also work on Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Opera browsers, as well as the Mozilla Firefox browser I was using.

I hope this helps someone else.
